Object storage: Manage media and files for web projects

Object storage is a storage model that stores files with object keys and associated metadata. Product images can be evaluated in web projects with user uploads or large media archives. Moving the application's files to another storage is not just about increasing disk capacity: access permissions, download links, cost and file lifecycle are replanned.

At what point does it leave the file system?

The application's reading from the local file system via the folder path and accessing an object store via API are different ways of working. The structure that looks like a “folder” does not mean the actual file system folder in every service. The plugin or file layer that the application uses must support the selected storage service.

Amazon S3's core service document explains the concepts of objects and buckets. This resource is an example of a provider; Don't assume that all object stores offer the same features or compatibility. When the phrase “S3 compatible” is heard, the API operations and client support needed should also be verified.

Separate which files to move in your project

The public product photo and the customer-specific document should not use the same access model. Application code, temporary files and media that will be stored for a long time also have different needs. In your first working file, include the file type, average size, reading frequency and who will access it. Without this inventory, do not move all shipments to a single open warehouse.

An example store can present product photos to everyone, but can only show special design files sent by the customer to the authorized account. Making the filename unpredictable is no substitute for true access control. It must be verified within the application which user the private file belongs to; Unnecessary public access should not be given.

Understand the trust relationship of the temporary connection

Some object repositories provide signed links that are valid for a certain period of time. These links can provide access to the file within the given authorization and time period. For sensitive files, do not share the link as a regular public address, as it is possible for the person receiving the link to forward it to someone else. Limit duration and scope of action as needed.

S3 signed URL document explains the provider-specific details of this method. Before creating a connection, the application must check the user's authority to the relevant file. The mere existence of a technical account with the right to generate URLs does not mean that everyone can access every customer file. Do not unnecessarily store all of these links in error logs.

Don't calculate cost by gigabytes stored alone

In addition to storage capacity, the number of requests, data transfer, class used and additional features may be included in the fee model. Current prices vary by provider. When estimating a month's cost, include the number of file uploads, average number of downloads, and total transfer volume. Consider actual usage ranges rather than vague expectations like “unlimited media.”

Multiple downloads of a large video do not cost the same as a rarely accessed document archive. In the low-cost archive class, there may be a retrieval period or processing fee. Therefore, do not choose the storage class based on unit price alone. The access time, technical support and data migration that the user expects are also part of the decision.

Make the move with matching and return plan

Keep track of the old file path and the new object key. Don't assume that links on content pages have been updated just because files have been uploaded. Test with representative images, large files, and names containing Turkish characters. If the content type is sent incorrectly, the browser may open or download the file unexpectedly.

Check separately for anonymous user, correct user and other unauthorized user scenarios in private files. Plan the verification and rollback process instead of deleting old files immediately. For files that are in two places at once, determine which is the master copy. Otherwise, content deleted on one system may continue to be used on another.

Clarify lifecycle and backup scope

Having a versioning or replication feature does not automatically meet all the recovery needs of the business. Different scenarios may be required for incorrect deletion, corrupt installation, and account inaccessibility. It is important that the file record in the application and the object in the storage can be recovered together. However, returning the file may not bring back which order it belongs to.

In the project proposal, you can send to PoolByte the capacity, access type, monthly transfer estimate and storage need. You can refer to the SFTP guide for the current broadcast files layout, and website backup guide for the recovery plan. Object storage is a powerful tool for the right need; It is not necessary to automatically switch every small site to this model.
