Enterprise SSO: SAML and OpenID Connect
· PoolByte Technology

A corporate customer may want their employees to log into your portal with a company account. SSO is used to meet this need. Protocols like SAML and OpenID Connect help establish a secure relationship between the identity provider and the application; but it does not automatically determine the user's role within the application.
Separate identity and authorization
The SSO response carries information about the user's verified identity. Your application’s authorization policy determines which projects the user can view and whether they can place orders or add team members. Making everyone an administrator on the grounds that "they logged in with a company account" is not a good start.
OpenID Foundation description describes the identity layer of OpenID Connect. When choosing a provider, find out the protocol the customer supports, the required claims or attributes, and the session termination expectation. Different customers use different identity providers, requiring configurations to be separated by organization.
Email alone may not be sufficient for account matching
An employee's email address may change or the same name may be given to someone else later. For persistent pairing, use the provider's trusted identity definition; Also take into account which organization and provider it comes from. Automatically merging an existing local account just because the incoming email matches may pose a risk of account takeover.
If an account will be opened at first login, keep the default role low. Also determine what happens to existing sessions in the application when the departing employee's access is disabled. Disabling a user in the identity provider does not mean that every application will immediately terminate its open session. Include this specifically in the acceptance test.
Use a maintained validation library and verify its rules
Signature, sender, target audience, duration and reuse checks should not be skipped. Serious problems can arise when details such as XML processing and response context are implemented incorrectly in SAML. OWASP SAML security guide lists key control areas for authentication. Use a properly maintained implementation rather than writing the protocol from scratch.
Prepare operating plan for certificate renewal or change of provider keys. Since a configuration error can prevent all employees from signing in, there must be a limited and auditable recovery method. This method should not turn into a generic backdoor that easily bypasses normal login policy.
Enterprise acceptance checklist
- Correct org, wrong org, and outdated response.
- Two different identities appearing to be the same email.
- New employee, role change and turnover.
- Identity provider outage and certificate replacement.
- Closing the current session and re-authenticating.
- Separate authorization control of administrator actions.
When adding the SSO scope to custom software project, do not just write an “enterprise login” clause. Identity matching, role management, session duration, and removal of access should be separate delivery metrics. Thus, integration is completed not when the employee can log in, but when he or she can work safely with the correct access.
